How to Play Words Online

Core Mechanics: Building Words

Start with 7 tiles. First word must cross the START square. Go vertical or horizontal. Every new word shares at least one tile with what's already on the board. Drag letters from your rack. Click Move to lock it in. Each tile has a point value. Blank tiles? Zero points but work as any letter. Strategic gold.

Scoring System: Maximizing Points

Points stack fast if you know the grid. LETTER x2 doubles that tile's value. LETTER x3 triples it. WORD x2 doubles the entire word score. WORD x3? Triple jackpot. Play all 7 tiles in one turn? Bonus 55 points on top. Game ends when tiles run out or after 3 consecutive passes. Final tally: your score minus unplayed tiles. If you empty your rack first, steal your opponent's leftover tile points.

Strategy: Hunt the Multipliers

Ignore safe plays. Target WORD x3 squares with high-value letters like Q, Z, X. Use blanks for impossible combos. Watch the tile count—when fewer than 7 spares remain, you can't exchange.
