Tavlei. Hnefatafl - Play Online

Viking Chess. Ancient strategy. Asymmetric warfare on an 11x11 grid. Tavlei. Hnefatafl drops you into the north's most brutal board game. King vs. invaders. Escape vs. capture. Unequal forces. Epic tactics.

How to Play Tavlei. Hnefatafl

The Goal: Two armies. Two missions. White (Defenders) must move the King from the center Throne to any of the four corner Shelters. Black (Attackers) must surround the King from all 4 sides or create an unbreakable blockade. Simple objective. Ruthless execution.

Move and Conquer

All pieces move like rooks in chess. Straight lines. Vertical or horizontal. Any distance. No jumps. Select a warrior. Green dots show valid paths. Click. Move. Capture by pinching enemy pieces from both sides with your warriors. The Throne (center) and Corners are sacred ground. King only.

Forces and Progression

Asymmetric battlefield. Black starts with 24 warriors. White has 12 warriors and 1 King. Outnumbered but mobile. Each move shifts the balance. Plan 3-4 moves ahead. Lose a key position? Game over. Positioning beats brute force. Territory control beats piece count.

Strategy and Tactics

Defenders: Don't turtle. Move the King early. Use warriors as decoys. Create escape corridors. Target the corners fast. Attackers: Build the net tight. Cut diagonal routes. Sacrifice pieces to block corners. Force the King into kill zones. Both sides: Think like Go. Encirclement is everything. One wrong move flips the board.

Key Features

    • Dual Modes: Duel with a friend on the same device. Or challenge AI in defense or attack roles.
    • Historical Mechanics: Viking-era gameplay. Not Chess. Not Go. A hybrid beast with asymmetric victory conditions.
    • Clean Vector Graphics: Flat 2D design. High contrast. Soft shadows. Runs on anything. Desktop. Mobile. Browser.
    • Strategic Depth: Forces multiply through positioning. 24 vs. 13 pieces creates infinite tactical variations.

Who is Tavlei. Hnefatafl for?

Perfect for strategy junkies and history buffs. Great for 5-20 minute mental battles. Fans of Chess and Go will find familiar patterns twisted into something sharper. Not for casual clickers. This demands focus.
